CASE STUDY

Moros Struggle in the Philippines

Ms. Carmen Abu Bakar briefly explained the historical facts about the Moros before she proceeded with her presentation.  She stated that the Moros, who are Muslims, are the religious minority in the Philippines.  In the 9th century Islam came to this country along with the spice trade.  Then came the Spaniards with their 3-Gs – GOD, GLORY AND GOLD.  They subjugated the Moro people as well as tried to Christianize them.

The Moros were termed as the least desirable people because they were savages and pagans.  This was propagated by the Spaniards in their colonial literature which has seaped down the ages. The Spanish literature prejudiced the people against the Moros.  In 1975 when a survey was conducted as to who would you choose as a business associate, a partner etc… the Moros name was at the bottom of the list.  In a Legal document presented in 1975, the Moros were termed as being uncivilized.  This was the general attitude of the majority of people towards the Moros. To know these tribal people who are not only victims of history but also victims of the contemporary media one has to travel to Mindanao.

The Moro people have been suppressed and have never been given an opportunity to participate in the government machinery. Unless they have representatives in the government, only then can their voice be heard.

Recently, over the past few years, the Moros have united under one banner called the Moros National Liberation Front. It receives funds and training

from outside  sources.  In the matter of liberation all the tribal people agree to self government. Petty little differences on a tribal basis are put aside and everyone looks forward to being liberated.
